We spent years learning to understand hydrodynamics, surfboard history, construction, and the aesthetic interest in surfing. In December 2005, we became passionate about starting a line of surfboards out of wood that would be hollow, more ecologically friendly than foam boards and be limited edition collector items and performance boards in their own right. The previous standards in construction have been foam, some solid wood balsa boards, as well as other hollow board designs, and recently new epoxy carbon fiber boards. We wanted to do something different: To design and build beautiful/aesthetically pleasing, archival, performance surfboards. We wanted to bring surfing closer to the water in a resonate, natural wood surf experience.
We decided on a model of part hand made, machine made, artist designed and technologically driven to give us the greatest versatility to modify, produce and customize each board upon order. Using digitally constructed cores from laser-cut Baltic birch airplane plywood, rails constructed from bent lamination/ solid wood for ease of shaping and strength, and skinned in furniture quality cedar and spruce. Our veneered designs are applied under a layer of 2-mil fiberglass/ epoxy resin and spar varnish and buffed to a mirror finish. We developed a prototype by studying hydrodynamics, the latest interest and innovation in creating speed, maneuverability, a comfortable and dynamic ride, flex and strength in the board itself, paddle speed on getting up on a wave and combining long board dynamics. We were interested in the old school style of nose riding and the aesthetic of surfing by old school masters who have since added short boards and fishes to their quivers. We added performance by using a concave nose, flow through to a flat, double V bottom out to V tail with 60/40 Rails to give good solid maneuverability to the board and matching our rocker to the surf conditions on 3-6 foot waves of the east/ west coasts.
To get to this we studied, looked at and felt as many of the old school and the latest boards out there, talked with old and young surfers alike and decided upon a model. We had a lot of support from master shapers such as Terry Martin, Mickey Munoz, Gary Larson, John Cherry as well as surfers, old and young alike such as Rich Kenny, Dave Mcmahon, JP Van Arsdale, Zach Freeman and as many people as we could get to ride our boards when we could find a good set of waves.
We will continue to design, improve and learn from the masters and test ride with the best surfers we can find and improve and modify our rides, since in the end, it's all about surfing, not just the look. We strive to make every board unique and specific to the client while perfecting our craft.
We greatly appreciate the support we have received from all of the people that have been a part of this venture. We look forward to our odyssey and will continue to create great works of art as well as the best ride we know how to envision and produce.
Many Thanks ~ Ric and Charles
